You’ve booked your family studio photoshoot (yay!), the date is in the diary, and now the question hits: what do we actually need to bring?
I’ve photographed enough families over the years to know that a little preparation can make a big difference to how relaxed you feel on the day. So, to take the guesswork out of it, here are 5 essential things to bring to your family studio photoshoot—nothing over-the-top, just simple things that’ll help your session go smoothly and feel easy.
1. Your Child’s Favourite Toy (Trust Me on This One)
Whether it’s a cuddly teddy, a teething ring, or that one toy they can’t live without – bringing something familiar can help your child feel more settled in a new space. Plus, we can sneak it into a few photos for a personal touch that you’ll love looking back on.
(Pro tip: if it’s something you’d rather not have in photos, pop it in your bag and I’ll use it behind the camera to grab their attention.)
2. A Hairbrush (For the Classic ‘Car Seat Hair’)
You know the drill—you get everyone looking perfect before you leave, and by the time you arrive, someone’s hair has gone rogue.
Bringing a brush (and maybe a quick bit of hair spray or gel) is a lifesaver for those final touch-ups before we start shooting.
My studio lights love to pick up every flyaway strand, so this little step makes sure you look your best.
3. Snacks & Drinks (Low-Mess Is Key!)
A family photoshoot is basically an adventure. And every good adventure needs snacks.
Pack a few low-mess options like rice cakes, fruit slices, or breadsticks to keep energy levels up without risking outfit disasters. A small bottle of water or juice is great too. Keeping little ones (and grown-ups) fuelled can be the difference between smiles and meltdowns.
4. A Spare Outfit (Even If You Don’t Think You’ll Need It)
While outfit changes aren’t always part of the plan, accidents happen. Whether it’s a dribble incident, a snack mishap, or just a change of heart, having a backup outfit on hand gives you peace of mind.
If you’re unsure what to bring, go for a simple neutral look that complements your main outfit. You’ll never regret being prepared!
5. A Relaxed, Go-With-The-Flow Mindset
I know this one’s not something you can pack in a bag, but it might be the most important thing you bring.
Photoshoots with children are always a little unpredictable—and that’s part of the magic. If you’re relaxed and enjoying the moment, your kids will feel it too. Don’t worry about perfection. My job is to capture the real, joyful moments that reflect your family as you are.
Bonus Tip: You Don’t Need to Overpack!
My studio is fully equipped with everything we need to create beautiful family portraits. All you need to bring is the essentials, and I’ll take care of the rest. You can relax knowing we’ll create photos you’ll treasure for years to come.
