Let’s be honest—when you bring up the idea of a family photoshoot, Dad’s reaction might be… less than enthusiastic. Maybe it’s the fear of posing, maybe it’s flashbacks to awkward wedding photos, or maybe he just thinks it’s “not his thing.”

But here’s the truth: family photography in Ossett doesn’t have to be awkward. In fact, I make it my mission to keep things relaxed, natural, and (dare I say it?) actually enjoyable.

If you’re trying to work out how to get Dad on-board for family photos without the eye-rolls, here are my tried-and-tested tips:

1. Don’t Call It a Photoshoot – It’s Family Time

The word “photoshoot” can feel intimidating. Instead, frame it as a fun family day out (or a quick pop into the studio for some nice updated photos).

We’re not aiming for stiff poses and fake smiles. My approach as a family photographer in Ossett is relaxed and natural. It’s about capturing moments that feel like you, not creating a forced version of it.

2. Reassure Him It Won’t Take Hours

One of the biggest turn-offs for dads is the thought of standing around awkwardly for hours on end. Good news:

Either way, I keep things moving and focused. No endless posing. No dragged-out sessions.

3. Outfit Planning – Keep It Simple

When it comes to outfits, less is more. Neutrals like greys, creams, soft browns, or navy always look great and don’t require a fashion degree to pull off.

If he’s comfy in jeans and a simple jumper or shirt—that works!

The key is coordination, not matching, so he can wear something that feels like him without overthinking it.

4. Show Him the End Goal

Sometimes it helps to show him what you’re aiming for. Scroll through my portfolio and point out the relaxed, candid photos where families are laughing, walking, or just hanging out.

These aren’t awkward family portraits from the ’90s—this is about creating memories. Once he sees it’s not going to be a “say cheese” session, it’s much easier to get him on board.

5. Let Me Take the Pressure Off You

Honestly, the best thing you can do is let me handle it. I’ve worked with every kind of dad—from “this isn’t my thing” types to the ones who secretly love a good photo op.

My job is to make everyone feel comfortable (even if they think they hate having their photo taken). All you need to do is get him through the door—I’ll do the rest.
