The summer holidays are brilliant… for about a week. Then you start hearing “I’m bored” on repeat and wondering how to fill six more weeks without emptying your wallet.

Luckily, if you’re based in or near Ossett, there are loads of things to do with kids in Ossett over the summer — and many of them are free or just around the corner. Here’s a round-up of ideas to keep little ones busy, get them outside, and maybe even create a few core memories while you’re at it.

1. Springmill Park + Nature Trail

Just off the Greenway, Springmill is a local gem with a lovely play area and plenty of green space. Take a football, pack a picnic, and let the kids run off some energy. There’s also a pond and nature trail to explore if they’re feeling adventurous.

2. The Greenway – Bike or Scooter Rides

Flat, safe and car-free — the Ossett to Horbury stretch of the Greenway is perfect for a family bike ride or scoot. Stop off at the café on Queens Drive for ice cream (or coffee for you).

3. Wonderland Awaits – Leeds City Centre (26 July – 31 August)

If you fancy a trip into Leeds, Wonderland Awaits is a magical, free family event happening all summer long. LeedsBID is bringing the beloved story of Alice in Wonderland to life across the city with colour, curiosity and creativity.
Pick up a trail map from Central Library, John Lewis, Leeds Station, or Trinity Leeds and explore 7 themed locations including the Corn Exchange, Merrion Centre, and Royal Armouries. Perfect for a day out with a little adventure.

4. Ossett Library Events

Our local library isn’t just for books. Over the summer holidays, they usually run story time, crafts, and even LEGO clubs. It’s free, indoors (perfect for rainy days), and a great way to sneak in some quiet time.

5. Creative Connections Summer Workshops

Throughout August, Ossett Library is also hosting Creative Connections — a series of free arts and storytelling workshops for kids aged 7–11. They’ll get to try printmaking, zine-making, creative writing and more, all run by local artists. You can find dates and details here. It’s totally free and perfect for curious minds.

6. Local Forest School Sessions

If your kids love mud kitchens, bug hunts and den-building, a forest school session could be just the thing. My friend runs a brilliant local forest school in Ossett that’s packed with outdoor fun and nature-based learning. You can find her on Facebook here for dates and booking info.

7. Local Cafés with Kids’ Menus

If you fancy a treat, try the kids’ menu at Cafe Vie or the recently re-opened  Farmhouse Kitchen. Both are family-friendly and perfect for a mid-morning milkshake and snack stop.

8. Feed the pigs & pick the strawberries

The summer is always a great time to visit Cannon Hall Farm or the lovely farm at East Ardsley Reservoir where you can pick wildflowers, strawberries and pumpkins (a bit later in the year). Its called Redwood Farm.

9. Have a Fun Photoshoot at My Ossett Studio

If your kids love performing, dressing up or just being the centre of attention for an hour, why not book a fun little session at my studio? You don’t need to wait for a special occasion — we can create a shoot that’s all about capturing your family just as they are right now.

My studio is cosy, relaxed and set up for real families (yes, snacks and silly faces welcome). Find out more about family shoots here.

10. Pottery Painting at Little Biscuit

Looking for something creative (that isn’t glitter all over your kitchen table)? Head over to Little Biscuit Pottery Painting in Morley. It’s a lovely way for kids to get stuck into something hands-on, and you get a keepsake at the end. Great for rainy days, birthdays or just a mid-week treat.

Bonus: Want to Make a Summer Memory That Lasts?

If you’ve been meaning to get family photos done, this could be the perfect time. Whether it’s a full session or a seasonal mini, I’ll help you create relaxed, natural photos of your family in my cosy Ossett studio — no pressure, no forced smiles, just memories worth keeping.
