If you’ve booked a family photography session (or you’re thinking about it), one of the first questions that usually pops up is… what on earth should we wear?

Don’t worry—I’ve got you. After photographing families in my Ossett studio for years, I’ve seen what works beautifully in natural light, and what can unintentionally steal the show (hello, neon logos).

Here are a few tried-and-tested tips to help you feel comfortable and look your best on the day.

Keep it simple and neutral

Soft, neutral tones always work well in my studio. Think whites, greys, beiges, soft pastels, gentle blues, sage greens—anything that feels calm and natural. These colours keep the focus on your faces and the connection between you.

Avoid bright reds, bold patterns, or clothes with big logos or slogans. They can be distracting in photos and might date the images quicker than you’d like.

Coordinate, don’t match

You definitely don’t need to go full “matching white shirts and jeans” (unless you really want to). Instead, aim for outfits that sit nicely together. Think of it like creating a little family colour palette. You might mix different shades of cream, denim and soft pinks—or blend earthy tones like olive, rust and tan.

Try laying the clothes out on your bed together. Do they look good as a group? Then you’re probably onto a winner.

Think about texture

Textures like linen, knitwear, denim and cotton photograph beautifully. They add depth and interest without being overpowering. So if your little one wants to wear their favourite knitted cardigan or you fancy a linen dress—go for it.

Comfort is key

The most important thing is that everyone feels comfortable. If your child hates that particular outfit or you’re worrying about a dress riding up—it’ll show. Choose clothes you can move in, cuddle in, and sit on the floor in if needed.

And don’t forget socks and shoes—bare feet or simple neutral socks often work best, especially if we’re doing some sitting-down shots.

Need help? Just ask

When you book a session with me, I’ll send over a little prep guide and I’m always happy to look over outfit choices if you’re unsure. You can even send me a quick photo of your options—no judgment, just helpful advice.
