If you’re planning a family photography newborn session and you’re stuck on what to wear—breathe. You don’t need a suitcase full of outfits or anything fancy. The best photos always come from simple, soft styling that keeps the focus on you and your family, not on loud patterns or fussy clothes.
When families book a newborn shoot with me at the studio (just a short hop from Wakefield), I always say the same thing: you don’t need to overthink it. Neutrals, soft textures, and outfits that you feel comfortable in will always look timeless.
My Top Tips for Newborn Photoshoot Outfits:
- Keep It Soft and Neutral
Creams, whites, soft greys, or earthy tones work beautifully. These colours photograph well and keep the attention on those tiny hands, yawns, and cuddles. - Match the Mood, Not the Exact Shade
You don’t need to be matchy-matchy, but it helps to keep everyone in a similar tone. Think mum in a soft linen blouse, dad in a light grey t-shirt, and baby wrapped in a muslin swaddle. - Layers & Textures Over Patterns
Delicate knits, linen, cotton wraps — these add depth without distracting from your faces. Steer clear of busy patterns or large logos. - Barefoot Is Beautiful
We often go for a relaxed, cosy vibe, so shoes are optional! Bare feet can actually help the photos feel softer and more intimate.
